President and Mrs. Benjamin Harrison had electricity brought into the White House in 1889, but they were so terrified of it that they had the servants turn the light switches on and off. If the servants had already gone to bed, the Harrisons slept with lights blazing.
It’s one thing to be cautious around things that are dangerous, like sharp knives, poisons, and electricity. But it’s a whole other thing to allow your mind to be consumed by irrational fear. How’s the fear level in your mind? Has basic caution ever morphed into dread in your mind? What is the stuff of your nightmares? Being alone? Business failure? Infertility?
Maybe it would help to name it right now. Is your fear something you can affect, or is it out of your control? If there is something you can do about it, form a plan and do what you need to do. If it is beyond your control, it is not your problem!
It might just be God’s. He doesn’t mind at all when you come to him with things that are bigger than you are. “Surely, O Lord, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield” (Psalm 5:12).
